It is believed that Columbus was born and lived in Genoa (Italy) and spoke a dialect of Ligurian but there is no proof (he wrote only in Castellano (Spanish). No authentic portrait of Columbus exists (only artistic impressions). He married a Portuguese noblewoman Filipa Moniz Perestrelo and was based in Lisbon but later fled to Spain where he had a Castilian mistress and had one son with each woman. He sought a western sea passage to the East Indies and Spanish Catholic monarchs Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II agreed to sponsor his journey in Aug Protected content . He sailed with three ships and made landfall in the Americas on 12 October on an island in the Bahamas, came to the islands of Cuba, Hispaniola and later established a colony in Haiti.
Columbus's remains were first buried in Valladolid then moved to Sevilla. In Protected content , the remains of both Columbus and his son Diego were moved to Santo Domingo, then to Havana (Cuba). In Protected content , the remains were moved back to the Cathedral of Sevilla (Spain).
