Photo Exhibitions: Peter Hujar's Performance and Portraiture

Peter Hujar ( Protected content ) was an American photographer best known for his black-and-white portraits. He was recognized as a major American photographer of the Protected content and 80s although receiving only marginal public recognition during his lifetime.
He was a consummate technician with portraits of people, animals, and landscapes, with their exquisite black-and white tonalities. He created enigmatic portraits from his travels, pictures of his close friends and contemporaries, as well as the performance and movement study scene emerging in New York’s East Village in the Protected content .
His images construct a new reality through subtle exchanges between himself and his subjects. Instead of photographing performances of the absurdist projects and psychedelic theatre troupes, he preferred to capture the actors and dancers backstage, in moments of transition—as they put on their costumes and make-up, preparing to embody the characters they would play.
From Protected content to Protected content he visited cities in Italy including Florence, Sperlonga, Palermo, and Naples. The works provide an overview of Hujar’s understanding of Italian landscapes, animals and humans; a mutual dialogue with what was in front of him.
The exhibition is a collaboration with Art Institute of Chicago. We will join a guided tour in Italian covering all the permanent as well as Hujar's collection.
We will meet directly at the venue, but we can offer a ride back to Firenze. Please inform us if you can also offer a ride to others
