Stories of a 13th Century Celestial Globe
In this seminar, I’ll be describing an astronomical globe that was made in Protected content during the Mongol era. The globe holds ideas that spanned more than a thousand years and represents the influences of the Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia. It’s a story about how knowledge was gathered during an era often called the Islamic Golden Age, and how that survived as the Mongols destroyed the Abbasid Caliphate.
I’m not an art historian but I do like art history and I wanted to share why this artefact, which currently sits in the Islamic Gallery of the British Museum, is such an interesting piece!
I’d like to give some time for everyone to introduce themselves, then give the talk and leave time for questions. If we weren’t in lockdown I’d take you there to see, but for now I hope you can enjoy the seminar instead!
