Lecture series : Eight ages of the Irish State, part I
Following the recent and highly successful series on Nazi Germany in the Highlights of History Group, the Learning Lovers chapter takes a completely different course and focuses on “Eight Ages” which promises to be a ground-breaking history charting the birth, growth and development of the Irish state as it approaches the centenary of its foundation in Protected content .
The series consists of eight one‑hour events, each dealing with a different decade, beginning with independence in Protected content . As is the case with all historical events, they do not, however, stick rigidly to their particular decade in order to avoid certain historical events from being split across two successive occasions.
The first and pilot exercise traces the origins of Irish nationalism from the mid to late nineteenth century, covering the Home Rule movement, the First World War, the Easter Rising and the tumultuous events that followed. These led to independence for 26 of Ireland’s thirty‑two counties and partition of the island for the first time ever, which has implications even more profound than imagined to the present day.
