Because the Schottenstift was never dissolved, its collections are of exceptional value. The museum, located in the former abbot’s residence, displays its most important pieces. The greatest treasure is the Schotten Altarpiece, a masterpiece of Gothic panel painting, likely created by an artist who migrated from Nuremberg. Two panels depict Vienna around Protected content are the city’s oldest known topographical views. Other highlights include a painting by Peter Paul Rubens, early Dutch landscape paintings, and a work by Austrian Baroque painter Franz Anton Maulbertsch. Historic furniture, liturgical objects and vestments, as well as books, manuscripts, and documents add to the museum’s distinctive character.
As part of the Saturday guided tours, visitors not only explore the museum but also other areas of Vienna’s oldest monastery, such as the crypt and the Neoclassical library. Tours take place every Saturday at 2:30 p.m. (except on public holidays). Due to space limitations, participation is limited to a maximum of 25 people, and advance registration is not possible. The meeting point is Protected content .
