Reading to Inner City Kids
For our November volunteer activity, we'll be working with the Reading to Kids program again. Please note that you are required to sign-up on the Reading to Kids website as well as on this InterNations site in order to participate. There are limited spaces available on their website so remember to RSVP there before the spaces are gone. You are not confirmed until you sign up in both places: Protected content
Reading to Kids is dedicated to inspiring underserved children with a love of reading. They coordinate reading clubs at elementary schools in downtown Los Angeles where volunteers read aloud to children and create arts and crafts projects about the stories. Each child receives a book to take home and the books read aloud are donated to the school's library. Reading aloud to children imparts a love of books that leads to improved literacy, to a more successful education, and to a brighter future.
We'll meet at 8:45am near the registration table so we can talk before the event begins.
To sign up to volunteer, please RSVP on InterNations, but you must also visit Protected content where you'll also need to register and RSVP. Click the "sign-up" button and you'll be taken to an online registration form to fill out with your background. Once completed, you'll be able to pick the school. Select Politi Elementary school and then select "InterNations Changemakers" as your volunteer group so we'll be placed together.
We work with the kids in partners but you can only partner with someone who has volunteered before. If you volunteered the last time we worked with Reading to Kids, feel free to list your name in the comments below so a new person can ask for you as a partner. Someone is welcome to select me as a partner since I've volunteered with the group before.
Please be sure to sign up soon, before Politi fills up with other volunteers. If you are unable to attend after signing up, please be sure to update your attendance on InterNations as well as the Reading to Kids website. You'll find a map, directions, and parking information once you sign up on the Reading to Kids website, as well as here: Protected content .
