Talk about languages: The Art of Translation

"You can't see them in the dark..." – our view of the world would be different if it weren't for those who enable us to discover other worlds: the translators! They enable us to get to know literature and acquire knowledge by transporting the content from one language to another. Translators need more than good language skills, they first make the cultural worlds enclosed in these languages visible.
In conversation with translators from Italian, Arabic, Japanese and Indonesian, we introduce these diverse cultural spaces, take a look at different translation workshops and learn which tools are used to transform texts into the German language. What challenges need to be overcome? How literally are they allowed to translate idioms? What are false friends? And why we can't leave this work to Google translation engines is revealed by Larissa Bender (from Arabic), Sabine Müller (from Indonesian), Heike Patzschke (from Japanese) and Achim Wurm (from Italian).
