Let's kick off a fortnight of choices galore with Diabolik as the foreign language cinemas whirls in.

The first of the Manetti brothers' stylized adventure series featuring the gentleman thief Diabolik begins with a late-'60s bongo-infused score and a chase scene through the beautiful northern Italy countryside. Master of disguises Diabolik always seems at least three steps ahead of the police. Played with steaming macho by "Grey's Anatomy" star Giacomo Gianniotti, Diabolik is both cunning and charming. When the equally mysterious Lady Eva Kant (Miriam Leone) appears, he may have met his match—or has he found a partner in crime? When Diabolik is finally caught, tried, and sentenced to (can it be?) death, there seems to be no way out, but this film is a reminder to everyone to brush up on your Morse code.—Dave Nuttycombe
