Carlos Medrano, born in Havana, Cuba, began his musical journey teaching himself bongos and congas through traditional Cuban music and rumba. After performing in folkloric and timba (Cuban salsa) projects, he continued his studies at the Escuela de Superación Profesional de Arte “Félix Varela y Morales”, where he developed his foundation in Latin jazz fusion.
He studied with renowned Cuban percussionists including José Antonio Oviedo, Ignacio “Jarabe” Martínez, Eliel Lazo, Yaroldy Abreu, and José Luis Quintana “Changuito.” In Cuba, he performed with big bands directed by Jorge Luis Triana at the Jazz Plaza International Jazz Festival and collaborated with artists such as Orlando Sánchez (Cuba Jazz), Danay Bautista, Bobby Carcassés, and pianist Alexis Bosch.
Since moving to the United States in Protected content , Medrano has performed with numerous Bay Area groups and appeared at festivals including the San José Jazz Festival, the San Francisco Carnaval, and venues such as Yoshi’s Jazz Club.
