The young dancer Lulu is still waiting for her big breakthrough.
As the mistress of the wealthy Dr. Schön, she lives a materially carefree life, but he refuses to marry her out of fear for his social standing. Lulu therefore uses her ability to manipulate the people around her through her captivating beauty and feigned openness in order to get what she wants. In doing so, she brings about the downfall of both men and women.
Pandora’s Box is closely intertwined with the charisma and life story of its leading actress. Louise Brooks embodies the archetype of the “New Woman”: like Marlene Dietrich in The Blue Angel Protected content , she must assert herself in a male-dominated world and uses every means at her disposal to do so. The film outraged critics because of its sexual openness; it also features one of the first—if not the first—openly lesbian characters in film history.
