- Protected content

The Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne has been a treasured part of Melbourne’s cultural life for more than Protected content – much loved by generations of Victorians, as well as by many visitors from interstate and overseas. It is a picturesque haven for recreation and an important resource for education, conservation, science and horticulture.

The Melbourne Botanic Gardens was established in Protected content a site of nearly 2 hectares south of the Yarra River near the centre of Melbourne. Its purpose was to provide a pleasure garden for the growing metropolis. The Gardens continued to grow in size during the first half of the 19th century, and eventually received a Royal warrant in Protected content , becoming the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne.

Today the Gardens extend across 38 hectares Protected content and display almost 50,000 individual plants representing 8,500 different species.
