Climbing Palestine – The Growth of Climbing in the West Bank
When we hear about Palestine in the news, we conjure images of failed peace negotiations, military occupation, violent clashes, checkpoints and walls. Rock climbing might be the last thing that comes to mind.
Tim Bruns, founder of Wadi Climbing gym and author of Climbing Palestine, will speak about his experience living in the West Bank and developing a grassroots Palestinian climbing community. In Protected content , Tim and his business partner moved to the city of Ramallah to open the first climbing gym in Occupied Palestinian Territories. Their goal was to use climbing as a tool for social empowerment in a place where freedom of movement is severely limited.
Tim is invited by the Boulder–Nablus Sister City Project to discuss the thriving Palestinian climbing community, the development of sport climbing areas around the West Bank, the intersection of climbing and politics and why the freedom of movement that climbing provides is so meaningful in the context of Palestine. The talk will be accompanied by a slideshow and some short videos that showcase what Palestine has to offer!
