Astronomers use the word conjunction to describe two celestial objects’ close approach as seen from the Earth. Great conjunction refers to Jupiter and Saturn’s close approach.

This year, it will take place on December 21, on the day of the winter solstice, when Jupiter and Saturn will be only 0.1 degree apart. That is just 1/5 of a full moon diameter. The rarity of it is due to the slow-motion of the two planets across the sky. It will be the closest Jupiter-Saturn conjunction since March Protected content , and this year’s conjunction will not be matched until Protected content .

The conjunction is not an event that occurs for a few minutes, as the total solar eclipse, so you do not have to wait for the exact moment. The planets will be visible near each other every night for the rest of Protected content an appealing and mind-expanding sight!

...........................................................................................

Join us on a walk to an observatory where - if weather conditions allow - we´ll be able to watch this rare event and expand our minds. :-)

The walk is fairly easy, but uphill all the way,
about 9 km / 2.5 hours of leisurely walking.

Admission to the observatory is 60 CZK.
