Based on true events and the novel by Aleksandrs Grīns (banned in the USSR), the film follows 16-year-old Arthur who enlists in WWI after losing his mother. After surviving the brutalities of trench warfare and personal loss, he questions whether his efforts were futile and whether hope lies in rebuilding family and home as Latvia itself is born from the ashes of war.
The film became the highest-grossing movie in Latvian box office history and has been praised by international critics for its atmospheric cinematography and powerful coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of World War I.
