Language Café - Lost in Translation – why I still don’t understand British jokes and how to get a Scottish Accent
The idea is to meet in a nice location with delicious food and to have a drink or two and to practice languages in a fun way. Geeky conversations and swapping into a certain languages is optional and the group can take a dynamic approach and rotate according to different languages and interests.
This is not only designed for polyglots but also really for everyone who would love to better understand foreign cultures.
There is so much stuff we could possibly discuss:
Some troubleshooting why a certain language is just so difficult. Why do people give up? What are the ways to make new words more digestible for the brain? What are the best techniques to better use the left side of the brain? How can I become more flexible in recognising patterns? Is it possible to fully culturally adapt? Is perfection realistic?
Let’s swap knowledge! Even more practically:
Multicultural relationships and why it can be tough sometimes…What to bring as a present in China? Are British people really drinking that much tea? How is the office life different in the UK? Do Koreans and French understand each others humor? Pls tell us a joke!
Brexit? The end of multiculturalism and streamlining everyone? I don’t think that would be feasible even if we tried to do so….
