BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL - KWAME BRATHWAITE

If each of us knows the expression "Black is beautiful", few people know who popularized it.
It is to an African-American photographer that we owe, more than a slogan, an aesthetic specific to the community. Originally from Brooklyn, Kwame Brathwaite ( Protected content ) founded, in the Protected content , a movement whose ambition is to account for an original culture that emancipates itself from the dominant culture. Through the AJASS - African Jazz-Art Society & Studios, a collective founded with his brother Elombe Brath - he creates a space for artistic, musical and photographic production that redefines the aesthetic canons of black beauty. The Grandassa Models, militant figures of this counterculture, participate in happenings that combine fashion, performance and political claim. Adored with African hairstyles, symbolic jewelry and handmade clothing, they embody a new pride: that of regaining one's body and image.
