Great Falls and C&O Canal Hiking, Maryland Side
The area of Great Falls offers several scenic hiking trails, beautiful landscape, easy access to the canal towpath, and ranger programs that tell the story of the C&O Canal through unique experiences like rides on a replica canal boat. Great Falls and the C&O Canal have held special meanings over the centuries. To American Indians, it was a gathering place; to George Washington it was a dream of American commerce and an awe-inspiring site.
Join us to visit this area of Great Falls to admire the flora, fauna and try out one of the hiking paths we can take:-
--Ford Mine Trail - 2.1 miles (roundtrip) - Moderate
Trail leads over streams and up into the hills, passing the remains of the Ford Mine Protected content gold mining operations. Access is located at the end of Great Falls parking lot.
--Gold Mine Loop - 1.6 miles - Easy
The Maryland Mine ( Protected content ) processed gold. Situated in the heart of the gold mining tract, the loop can be accessed from the Gold Mine Spur, the VFW Spur, the Falls Road Spur, the Rockwood Spur, the Valley Trail, Anglers Spur, Woodland Trail and Overlook Trail.
