Conference: the Coatlicue of Tenochtitlan
At this conference, given by Dr. Leonardo López Luján, we will explore the biography and cultural trajectory of Coatlicue, or "Coatlicue the Great. This sculpture—which represents a being half-woman, half-animal—is paradigmatic, as it has been viewed throughout history with admiration, horror, enthusiasm, or curiosity, but never with indifference: it was a mother goddess, as feared as it was venerated, for the Mexica priest; the embodiment of a demon for the Spanish evangelist; an idol without head or feet for the 18th-century soldier; a historical document for the positivist scientist; a muse for the post-revolutionary artist; and a work of art for today's museum visitor.
The conference is free but you need to get a ticket in advance.
