Views and ancient Nice: Sketching from the Colline du Château, N
Let’s join for some sketching up on the Colline du Château, above Nice Old Town. Here we have lovely views across the Baie des Anges and down to the port. There is no chateau on the Castle Hill, but there are a lot of interesting things to see. Originally a Greek settlement, by the 11th century there was a medieval chateau, a cathedral, and a hilltop village encircled by a walled fortress. As the village expanded, it relocated to where Nice Old Town is now with the chateau protecting the village below. Nice was constantly under attack and in Protected content lost its castle to Louis 14th when it was dismantled.
There are still the ruins of the original Cathedral, mosaics from Greek beginnings, and around the back, two fascinating cemeteries.
I propose that we spend the morning in the pleasant hilltop gardens (it’s from the Chateau that the daily noon-time cannon is shot) and after lunch we can go to explore the cemeteries and continue our sketching. You can bring a picnic, or otherwise there are places where you can get light refreshments on the hill. It is up to you how long you want to stay. Bring your own sketching materials – pen and paper and whatever else you want to use.
