Menton: Lemons and Jean Cocteau
Let's explore Menton, capital of lemons (the world famous lemon festival is celebrated in February) and frequently visited by Jean Cocteau from the Protected content .
For those who would like to sketch, let's meet to sketch in the old town. For anyone who has never sketched before, why not give it go? I will bring some extra pencils and paper so that you can try your hand at sketching. This time last year I was putting pen to paper for the first time since school, so don't be afraid!
Otherwise, there is lots to explore in the old town of Menton. Jean Cocteau was asked to decorate the town's wedding hall in Protected content in recognition of this was declared honorary citizen of the town. He was invited to create a museum in the Bastion, which was a disused 17th century fort near the harbour. Following a serious storm in Protected content , this is the only part of the museum currently open to the public. Though small, it holds a lovely collection of some of pieces of art collected by Cocteau including some of his graphic works and from early avant-garde graphic works with pencil, pastel, and watercolours on paper.
The Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange has a majestic staircase to a square where the whole perspective of Baroque architecture triumphs.
After lunch in a local restaurant, more sketching, sightseeing or a swim from one of the lovely beaches will be a good finish to the day.
