Sketching in Cannes: Picnic at Villa Rothschild
Not to be confused with the other Villa Rothschild at St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, this is in Cannes. Baroness Betty de Rothschild ( Protected content ), visited Cannes in the winter of Protected content . She liked it so much that she decided to build a villa here. Buying more than 3 hectares of land, there were already five villas, so she kept 2 for her servants and demolished the others to build a villa designed by Marseille architect Charles Baron.
After her death, the villa was inhabited by barons Alphons, Édouard, Maurice and Philippe de Rothschild, but during WWII, it was requisitioned by the Germans, subsequently being bought in Protected content the city of Cannes to install there the municipal library.
A beautiful example of fine neoclassical architecture, the building is surrounded by beautiful shady gardens. There are plenty of benches and places to sit in the shade and so bring a picnic. We can picnic in the gardens.
I suggest meeting any time from 9am, as some people prefer to start early, while it is cooler.
