Sketching in Villefranche
Let's visit Villefranche for some sketching. If it is cold we find a cosy café by the port to sketch, otherwise there is are a lot of possibilities in this pretty old town.
Villefranche-sur-Mer and the surrounding area was for over Protected content hotly disputed between the Holy Roman Empire and the French. In Protected content , when the Franco-Turkish armies sacked and occupied the city, the citadel and fort on Mont Alban were built. Going too and fro between Savoy and the French, finally in Protected content , along with Nice, it went to France and Villefranche is now considered a suburb of Nice.
There are several interesting churches and chapels such as the Église Saint-Michel in the centre of the town, built in the Protected content in the baroque Italian-style, where there are various works of art, and the 16th century Chapelle Saint-Pierre that was restored in Protected content Jean Cocteau adding his murals depicting the life of the saint and of local fishermen.
Other things to see in Villefranche include the old harbour that dates back to the 17th century, the 16th century Citadel that houses three museums, and the curious Rue Obscure that is a passageway under the harbour front houses which dates back to Protected content .
