The Spirit of the Middle East Food: Mezza

"Mezza" (also spelled "mezze" or "meze") refers to a selection of small dishes served as appetizers in Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and Balkan cuisines. It's similar in concept to Spanish tapas — small plates meant for sharing.
Common Mezza Dishes:
Here are some popular items typically found in a mezza spread:
Cold Mezza:
Hummus – Mashed chickpeas with tahini, lemon juice, and garlic.
Baba Ghanoush – Roasted eggplant mixed with tahini, olive oil, and seasonings.
Labneh – Strained yogurt, thick and creamy, often topped with olive oil and za’atar.
Tabbouleh – Parsley salad with bulgur, tomato, mint, onion, and lemon juice.
Muhammara – Roasted red pepper and walnut dip.
Warak Enab – Stuffed grape leaves (dolma), usually with rice, tomatoes, and herbs.
Olives and Pickles – A mix of tangy and salty additions.
Hot Mezza:
Falafel – Deep-fried chickpea patties, often served with tahini sauce.
Kibbeh – Bulgur shells stuffed with minced meat and spices, then fried or baked.
Sambousek – Fried or baked pastry filled with cheese, meat, or spinach.
Fried Halloumi – Slices of salty cheese, grilled or fried.
Served With:
Pita Bread – Fresh or toasted, to scoop up dips and sauces.
Arak or Wine – In many Middle Eastern cultures, mezza is served with alcoholic drinks like arak, especially in Lebanese cuisine.
