The Long, Hot Summer (1958) Di Martin Ritt
Three short stories by William Faulkner mixed together by screenwriters Irvng Ravetch and Harriet Frank Jr. give rise to an American southern family portrait of conflicts, attractions and power: Ben Quick, a handsome drifter with a reputation as an arsonist, hitchhikes to a Mississippi town where almost everything seems to belong to patriarch Will Varner, who ends up hiring him as a clerk in his store and looks forward to a marriage with his daughter Cla- ra. Rivalry, between Varner's son and Ben, and sexual tension between Ben and Clara: a southern mélo with Tennessee Williams influences, colourful, somewhat morbid, with Orson Welles's rampant Varner and the Actors Studio's best young people: Joanne Woodward, Anthony Franciosa, Lee Remick and, above all, Paul Newman as Ben Quick.
