“Caravaggio a Roma. Il viaggio del Giubileo”, a documentary that intends to explore the most intimate, spiritual and human dimension of Michelangelo Merisi.
Presented to the public in a Jubilee year, it offers a parallel between the lights and shadows of the Rome of the Jubilee of the Protected content and the contemporary one. The intention of director Giovanni Piscaglia, based on a story by Didi Gnocchi and screenplay by Eleonora Angius, is to tell the story of Caravaggio starting from the year that represented his moment of consecration, namely the Holy Year of Protected content , when he presented the "Vocation" and the "Martyrdom of St. Matthew", canvases destined to change the history of art forever. After that climax, his subsequent evolution from everyday to sacred themes is explored, trying to highlight, but here the passage becomes a bit confused, his tormented faith, which at a certain point, especially when he kills a man, seems more driven by guilt and desire for redemption, to return to the good graces of those nobles and prelates who had contributed to his glorification....
