Madame Butterfly Opera
Cio-Cio-San, whom her people call Butterfly, marries American Naval officer Pinkerton. Whilst Pinkerton is only on the lookout for a brief affair, Butterfly accepts that to her the marriage represents a cut-off from her past and her cultural traditions. He returns to America, leaving Butterfly behind, pregnant and full of hope for the future. Pinkerton returns to Japan after three years. His plan is to take the child with him to the States and to his new American wife. Cio-Cio-San commits suicide.
With a musical flair of the exotic, Puccini throws a light onto the far side of colonialism – the world premiere of this „Japanese tragedy“ took place in Protected content revealed the strangeness between different cultures and the way they generally approach each other.
