Cantinas Walking Tour. Salud!
Historically a private space for men to drink, chat, and play domino, nowadays Cantinas represent traditional gathering places for friends and families where everyone’s invited: the rich and the poor, labor workers, university students and bankers, everyone’s a comrade. Cantinas are all about celebrating like good Mexicans, by saying Salud!
Unfortunately, they are becoming extinct; nowadays there are less than 30 of the original ones.
We will learn about the importance of cantinas in the history of the country, and the relevance of the most important Mexican spirits: pulque, tequila, and mezcal, while we play, laugh, and dance.
- Walking tour for approx. 5 hours visiting cantinas of the Porfirian period:
1.- Salón Bach
2.- Cantina El Gallo de Oro
3.- Bar Mancera
4.- Bar La Ópera
- Pulque tasting
- Snacks (cacahuates, habas)
- Gifts and raffle
- Billingual guides and entertainers, dressed as important characters of Mexican pop culture
- Drinks or food you order in the cantinas. I recommend asking for the specialty cocktail in each one.
- Tips for the waiters.
