100-Year-Old Secret Cave Is Only Open Once a Year
It's not just the Americans who celebrate the 4th of July.
In Denmark, more precisely Søndermarken in Copenhagen is a memorial for Danish emigrants close to the entrance from Pile Alle and Frederiksberg Castle.
And only one day each year, you can enter it.
The memorial mound first opened on 9 August Protected content to commemorate the Danish emigrants who went to America and never came back.
At that time, the memorial mound was a huge run-in.
Both the royal house and more than 40,000 guests were there on the opening day – twice as many during the year.
Today there are zero guests Protected content a year.
But one day – on the American Independence Day, July 4, the monument is open to the public.
Many call the secret cave the Copenhagen counterpart to Rebild Bakker, and the Copenhageners were also happy that it was the man behind the Gefion Spring, Anders Bundgaard, who designed the memorial.
The funds for the project were obtained through international and worldwide collections among Danes abroad. A total of $12,000 was raised.
The monument was originally intended for a location in Dyrehaven or on the ramparts around the Kastellet, but it ended up with a location in Søndermarken in connection with Frederiksberg Castle, and we are happy about that every year on July 4, when the gates are opened to the many Copenhageners, who would like to have an experience out of the ordinary.
The room is dome-shaped with an incident light above – just like the Pantheon in Rome.
