BITOI at Copenhagen Opera Festival

Primordial vocal harmonies and hypnotic, lingering bass lines will wrap The Red Square in an atmosphere from another world when the critically acclaimed ensemble BITOI performs a sunset concert on Saturday.
BITOI – short for Bass Is The Original Instrument – brings together Swedish-Ethiopian composer and bassist Cassius Lambert with three exceptional vocalists: Alexandra Shabo, Lise Kroner, and Anja Tietze Larhmann. Together, they explore the meeting point between the modern electric bass and the human voice as a timeless instrument in boundary-pushing compositions.
Blending elements of folk, experimental, and electronic music, BITOI has gained international attention following a European and Japanese tour and the release of their debut album Sirkulu. Their sound is both grand and intimate – prehistoric and refreshingly new.
Birdsong, rustling wind, and vocal percussion meet Lambert’s bass in a haunting contrast, as the singers push their voices to the limits with goosebump-inducing harmonies and texts based on the phonetic patterns of bird calls. Praised by influential British outlets such as The Wire Magazine and Crack Magazine, BITOI’s live performances have been described as nothing short of “soul-cleansing.”
The concert is presented in collaboration between Copenhagen Opera Festival and ALICE.
