You might be able to hum along to the famous Toreador aria – but how well do you really know the story of Bizet’s iconic opera Carmen? Join us as we set the stage for the evening’s grand concert performance with a live edition of the popular Danish podcast Operaguiden.

Once again, Operaguiden leaves the P2 studio behind and heads to the Festival Stage on Protected content , where hosts Benedikte Granvig (radio presenter), Thorkil Jacobsen (cultural journalist), and conductor Magnus Larsson dive deep into the world’s most performed opera: Georges Bizet’s Carmen.

The same evening, Malmö Opera Orchestra and Chorus will perform a shortened concert version of the work – but first, Operaguiden takes us beyond the familiar arias and into the lesser-known corners of Carmen. Expect musical insights, laughs, and unabashed operatic nerdery. From the opera’s rocky premiere in Protected content its global triumph – and modern critiques of its controversial ending – there’s no shortage of drama, on or off the stage. So grab a coffee or a glass of wine and settle in.

Operaguiden was created as a spin-off to DR’s popular TV series Operarejsen, in which friends Frederik Cilius, Rasmus Bruun, and Allan Gravgaard Madsen travel across Europe and the U.S. in search of grand operatic – and culinary – experiences. The podcast is available on DR Lyd, and later this year, the team will launch a new series: Orkesterguiden.
