"All the misery in this world comes from Nippes, Kalk and Ehrenfeld." This saying is now more than a hundred years old. Ehrenfeld and Nippes have become hugely popular Veedel (quarter). Kalk is still lagging a bit behind. The saying is a typical Colognian phenomenon: The city was too narrow for factory buildings at the end of the 19th century. They were looking for cheap building land outside the city walls. There, the workers and employees settled next to the factories. It was built quickly, cheap, without development plan, without paved roads or connections to the city. The structural change from the end of the Protected content has added a lot to lime, the only long-established factory in the district that still produces today is the brewery Sünner.
