It bustles again in Maastricht, your carnival city of the Netherlands!

Meaning of carnival
Carnival is originally a Catholic celebration. Carnival is celebrated on the three days before Ash Wednesday. Traditionally, the party lasts three days, from Sunday to Tuesday, but in practice you see that the parties usually start on Friday. The name Carnival is probably from Latin. Carne vale means something like saying goodbye to meat.

Carnival in Maastricht:
Carnival in Maastricht means a lot of attention and love making the costumes (pekskes) and makeup. The most beautiful creations can be admired by everyone on the streets or make their appearance during the parades. Since the Maastricht Carnival in the Rhineland tradition largely takes place outside on the street, the city is completely enveloped in the three official colors; red, yellow and green. Additionally worry 'Zate Hermeniekes' on almost every street corner there is enough atmosphere and music.
