Eltville is the oldest town in the Rheingau region. Its geographical location—in the center of the old Rheingau, surround by mountains, forests, vineyards, and the Rhine—is significant for its status in the history of the “little country of Rheingau.”
Eltville was the capital of the Rheingau during the Electorate of Mainz period and has held town privileges since Protected content . Roman and Frankish settlement remains predate the first documented mention under Archbishop Friedrich of Mainz Protected content .
A rare stone document of an altar foundation in the church under Archbishop Williges ( Protected content ) mentions viticulture (unam vineam) for the first time.
The Electoral Mainz castle was the archbishop's residence until the second half of the 13th century, making Eltville a popular place for noble settlements.
Gutenberg received the only honor of his life here when the archbishop took him into court service with a guarantee of livelihood (including an annual delivery of two barrels of wine).
Eltville is one of the first seven printing locations in the world.
The historic townscape is significantly shaped by the trinity of the castle, church, and noble courts.
