Afterwork-Vinotheque-Evening
The economic sector to which the town owes its fame is primarily winemaking. Since a visit by Queen Victoria in Protected content the town's name, known in English-speaking countries as Hock, has become synonymous with Rhine wine in general and with wine from the Rheingau region in particular.
According to tradition, the saying “A good Hock keeps off the doc!” became established at the British court due to the good taste of Hochheim wines and their nutritional value. This means: A good Hochheimer replaces any doctor, or keeps the doctor away.
Buildings and Structures
In Hochheim and Massenheim, Protected content objects have been listed as historical monuments. These include the old town of Hochheim and the village center of Massenheim, with its many restored half-timbered houses. For an unobstructed view of the entire Hochheim complex, the vineyards sloping southward toward the Main River are considered a green area worthy of protection. Since the demolition of the city wall at the beginning of the 19th century, the view from the south has remained unchanged. Since then, the town has grown only to the north, east, and west.
The eye-catcher in the southern city skyline is the Church of St. Peter and Paul, a Baroque-style church with frescoes by the German Baroque painter Johann Baptist Enderle, who was born in Söflingen (Ulm) in Protected content . The restoration of the frescoes, begun in Protected content , was completed in Protected content .
