Public Open Day at the Institute of Making: Delight and Disgust
OK OK the Institute’s cover shot for this event is a bit gross but bear with me! I have wanted to visit this place for years and they only do public open days once in awhile. I also thought of all the IN groups I’m part of and this one strikes me as the most appropriate. It peers into a scientific area that isn’t that common and as a museum I think it’s unique at least within London.
This is an multi-disciplinary institute for research about manufacturing and materials science. One Christmas a friend at work gave me a sample of something she got there: it was this bizarre blue sand that stuck to itself but not to anything else. It was utterly intriguing. I’ve seen videos of aerogel – the lightest solid material in the world. And they have showcased all sorts of really interesting chemical compounds as well.
This open day has a theme “Delight and Disgust” – which will appeal most to the very curious. It’s about the emotions people have when they interact with various materials and it looks very interesting.
The plan is to see the open day and then go off for coffee somewhere.
