Mount of the Seven Curves and three Crater-Lagoons in Guadalupe Victoria (Cerro de las 7 Curvas y Lagunas Cráteres de Guadalupe Victoria)

The Cerro de las Siete Curvas is an ensemble of low peaks next to the lagoon called La Preciosa. It’s located in a valley surrounded by mountains that are part of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic belt.
The objective is to reach 2 or 3 summits keeping the hike a basic level. The total distance to cover will be approximately 5 to 7 km and the elevation gain will be 300m.
To reach the hike’s starting point, we’ll be transported on horse-drawn carts, that are used as transportation means by the farmers. Consider these carts are very rustic. The distance to cover on the carts is 10 kms round trip. During the trip we’ll be able to enjoy the view of the surrounding mountains: Derrumbadas Rosa y Azul, and Pico de Orizaba, and go through sown fields.

The Laguna La Preciosa, also known as Lagoon of the Mines because it’s located next to an old gold mine, it’s a crater lake. The intense blue of its water is produced by algae that grows in the area.

After the hike, we’ll be able to visit the entrance to the Gold Mine and then have lunch at the Lagoon La Preciosa and enjoy the sunset. For those of you that like bird watching, we may get lucky and encounter a Red-Tailed Hawk.
On Sunday we’ll visit the Crater Lagoons of Alchichica and Atexcac:

Alchichica “where time stopped” The lagoon is surrounded by coral like formations called stromatolites which are layered mounds of sedimentary rocks that were originally formed by the growth of layer upon layer of cyanobacteria, a single-celled photosynthesizing microbe. Fossilized stromatolites, some of which may date from 3.7 billion years ago, provide records of ancient life on Earth.

The lagoon is also habitat to endemic species like the Taylor Salamander also known as ajolote de Alchichica which can reach 18cms. The water is cold and presents beautiful blue tones. Water sports activities are held in the lagoon, including triathlons.
On the link below, you’ll find very interesting scientific information related to the Alchichica Lagoon, which has been studied concerning the origin of life on Earth.
