Ballet Hispánico New York: CARMEN.Maquia
Ballet Hispánico New York reexamines Carmen—her independence, intensity, risk, and desire—through movement and music as the story unfolds on stage.
Since her debut in Protected content , Bizet’s Carmen has remained a lasting cultural figure, inspiring artists across generations. In CARMEN.maquia, Ballet Hispánico offers a contemporary interpretation of the classic opera, honoring the character’s strength and complexity through dynamic choreography and a fresh perspective on the familiar story.
Fun fact: The title CARMEN.maquia is a play on the Spanish word tauromaquia (“the art of bullfighting”). By replacing tauro (bull) with Carmen, the work connects the heroine directly to the symbolism of the bullring—discipline, tension, and controlled danger—reframing Carmen as a powerful, untamable presence.
