Rhodes, far away from tourists (Athens)

Is it possible to get away from the tourists in Rhodes? A friend and I will be going to Rhodes on July 31st for an event that weekend but we'd like to go tp places where the locals go to and dine in. Can anybody suggest a good hotel near a sandy beach there as well please?
