• Culture, food, and the outdoors abound. Barcelona scores 84% for culture and nightlife, 86% for culinary variety, and 90% for recreational sports, with the beach and nature close by.

• Healthcare is strong and Spanish is learnable. 73% rate healthcare affordability positively and 60% say the language is easy to learn (vs. 39% globally).

• It's connected and easy to explore. 83% rate the availability of public transportation positively and 92% the opportunity to travel.

• Housing is punishingly tight. Just 10% of expats in Barcelona rate housing affordability positively, and Americans describe an abusive rental market.

• Bureaucracy is a real hurdle. Only 26% find it easy to deal with local authorities, and visa and residency processes drag on.

• Careers and safety take adjusting. Just 38% say the move improved their career prospects, and only 64% rate personal safety positively (vs. 81% globally).

• Air quality and city quirks bite. Only 48% rate air quality positively, with traffic, smoking, and graffiti recurring gripes.

For Americans, Barcelona delivers weather, food, culture, and a balanced, walkable life by the sea. The trade-offs are a brutal housing market, bureaucracy, and petty crime. If lifestyle matters more to you than career momentum, it's hard to beat.
