American Football in Basel
Greetings all, a little bit of unashamed promotion going on here for the Basel Gladiators American Football team.
Our season starts on the 29th of March against our old, but friendly, rivals the Grizzlies from Bern. The game will be held at the Rankhof Stadium, address: Stadion Rankhof, Grenzacherstrasse Protected content . There is a local bus service that stops right outside the stadium. Admission is just CFH Protected content adults less for kids.
We are the current Swiss Champs and are going into the new season defending the title. And, you know how it goes, everyone wants to knock the champ off the pedestal.
I cannot say that the team is even NCAA division 2 standard but we do have our moments. This year we are bringing in a quarterback from Northwestern State University and a linebacker from the University of Sioux Falls. Each team in Switzerland is allowed to hire two US players which helps to bring the standard of the game up.
The club itself is amateur and self-funding. All the guys that play on the team are local and the coaches are either ex-players or ex-pats like myself. The head coach hails from the Dallas-Fort Worth area of Texas and has lived here for over 20 years. We have even managed to get a couple of players into colleges in the US with one currently at Penn State and another who played on a scholarship at FSU.
We have built quite a good program now and support three teams, the seniors – over 19, 18 and under and a 16 and under teams. The organization is around Protected content all together.
So, if anyone is interested in seeing a game, participating in the club or even have a restless teenager at home who needs run off some steam then we’d be happy to see you.
