The Pioneer Museum in Silverton, Pretoria located a few minutes away, offers a glimpse into the early settler life of the 19th century in South Africa, particularly focusing on the lifestyle of the Voortrekkers / pioneer farmers / European settlers who migrated to the northern parts of South Africa during the Great Trek in the early 1800s preserving artifacts, tools, and household items that were used during this period, providing insight into the daily lives of the settlers, allowing visitors to see how these pioneers lived, worked, and survived in a new and challenging environment. The museum also features a working watermill, blacksmith demos, farming tools that illustrate the agricultural practices of the time, traditional skills and crafts of the 19th-century, such as bread-making, candle-making, and butter churning.
The museum's grounds are extensive, including gardens and orchards typical of farms in the mid-1800s.
Let's bring a picnic blanket and have a breakfast picnic with the fresh and delicious foods we purchased at the farmer's market.
