When first moving to Washington, D.C., I didn't know many people outside of the office. InterNations has changed that with some exciting events.
Living in Irving
Irving is a city in Texas, situated between the neighboring cities of Dallas, Fort Worth and Arlington. It has a population of around 225,000 but the surrounding Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan area is home to almost 7,000,000 people. Sometimes referred to by its residents as “The Crooked I,” it is also home to the upscale Las Colinas area, a planned development with many areas of desirable housing, large businesses and close connections to Dallas and Fort Worth. This neighborhood also features The Mustangs of Las Colinas, said to be the world’s largest equestrian sculpture. The Irving Arts Center, meanwhile, is a hub for the local cultural scene. Irving is certainly a fast-moving place and InterNations provides a great platform for expatriates in Irving to keep up with developments and network with like-minded people from diverse international backgrounds who are also expats living in Irving, Texas, the United States, or in any other part of the world.

Moving to Irving
Irving’s varied and excellent housing stock includes luxury townhouses, urban apartments, lofts and gated communities. The city is crisscrossed by many highways and is served by the Trinity Railway Express route. Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport is actually within the city limits, so expats moving to Irving should not have any problems transportation-wise. And the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) system provides local public transport. There is a good choice of schools in the area and the city is home to the University of Dallas and contains campuses of a number of other higher education institutes. Many expats in Irving use the forums and discussion boards on InterNations for insider information on, for example, the best schools to send one’s kids to or the best neighborhoods in Irving.
Working in Irving
Irving has a booming economy and a number of Fortune 500 companies have a significant presence in the city. These corporations include major employers such as Citigroup, Verizon, Exxon Mobil, Nokia, Microsoft and NEC. With such a high-tech group of employers, there are many opportunities for expatriates in Irving. The area is also perfect for commuting into either Dallas of Fort Worth and taking advantage of the many employment opportunities available there. The wider state of Texas is, of course, a center for the international oil industry and many leading companies in this industry are headquartered within easy commuting distance of Irving. The international expatriate community in Irving is therefore large and diverse. Joining InterNations is a great way to ensure that you are plugged into this huge resource of expertise and opportunity. You will find numerous forums and discussion boards where you can make connections and perhaps uncover hidden job opportunities, while Expat Magazine supports these resources with articles on how to successfully adapt to an expatriate lifestyle.
