Life in Lahore

Healthcare in Lahore

Although the healthcare system in Pakistan is way behind that of many Western countries, expatriates living in Lahore will be pleased to know that, as the second city, Lahore has some of the best facilities in all of Pakistan. However, expatriates living in Lahore are advised to take out comprehensive private medical insurance, as the public system is fraught with issues, and response and waiting times can be very lengthy.

The most notable private hospitals are Farooq Hospital, Fatima Memorial Hospital, Haleema Memorial Foundation Hospital, and Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre, all of which would be suitable for expatriates living in Lahore. Common medications are easily available, but if you need a specific prescription you are advised to stock up before moving to live in Lahore.

Education in Lahore

The most notable international schools in Lahore are the American International School, The International School of Choueifat, and Scarsdale International School, all of which are suitable for the children of expatriates living in Lahore. There are a number of universities in the city, many of which rank in the top 10 for Pakistan, and as such Lahore has become known as the educational capital of the country.

The main universities are Government College University, Forman Christian College, University of the Punjab, and University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore. Due to its advanced technological economy, many students stay and live in Lahore after graduating, and the former student population is vital to the thriving economy of the city.

Transportation in Lahore

Lahore is the only city is Pakistan to have public transport that runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This includes the bus network, private taxis, and rickshaws, all of which are quick and inexpensive ways to get around city, particularly in the city center, where traffic can be an issue for car drivers. The taxis and buses run on renewable fuels so as to decrease pollution in the city.

The public transport system is also better equipped and managed than similar systems across Pakistan, and as well as a fleet of new buses, has features like e-ticketing. If you wish to drive whilst living in Lahore, you can do so for six months using your foreign driving license, after which you will need a Pakistani license. The road system is one of the best in Pakistan, but traffic can be problem, particularly at rush hour and in the city center.
