Originally a small fishing village, Lilongwe was officially founded in 1906 as a trading post and after many years' growth into an important trading center, it became Malawi's capital city in 1975. Its booming economy has many contributors today, including tobacco, food processing, light industries, finance, retail, tourism, construction, and transport. Home to Kamuzu International Airport, it also has efficient bus and rail services. Expat parents will be glad to hear that there are more than 30 private schools, while the many bars, nightclubs, and restaurants offering international cuisine, from Korean and Chinese to Indian and Italian, are a delight for everyone.
