Originally a small fishing village, Lilongwe was officially founded in 1906 as a trading post and after many years' growth into an important trading center, it became Malawi's capital city in 1975. Its booming economy has many contributors today, including tobacco, food processing, light industries, finance, retail, tourism, construction, and transport.
