Moving funds from the US to UK (London)

I'm moving to London with my English husband in April but unsure as to how best to transfer my finances from my US bank to a UK bank. Who have others used to move large sums without a hefty fee and fair exchange rate?

Also -- is there any reason not to open a joint account with my husband? (Thinking of the possible tax implications)?
