Living costs in Montreal (Montréal)

Hello all!

I am considering to start my PhD in Montreal in September this year. I would get a scholarship for the tutition fees and an extra Protected content monthly in the first year and Protected content afterwards.

I did some internet research about living costs in Montreal and asked some people who live there. The opinions have been very diverse. Some people said that the amount is very small, others think that it is ok.

So I thought to ask the InterNations community, where I hope to get many diverse answers again :)
What kind of live will I have with Protected content ?
I don't need a luxuary life, but I actually enjoy going out at weekends, maybe having a cinema or a beer during the week, the usual stuff.

I am thankful for any information and hint. Btw, my university would be the Université de Montréal, so I may be interested to live close.
