Visa help (New Delhi)

Hi, just re-joined InterNations after a long absence...

I have been married to an Indian national for nearly 2.5 years and have been living in India for the same amount of time. I'm British and am still here on a tourist visa since the Indian High Commission in London flatly refuses to grant me any other type of visa, even though I'm married to an Indian and am living here permanently.

I've had the tourist visa converted and extended once last year but then went back to the UK when it expired and was again, given a tourist visa. Now I've been informed that the FRRO/MHA in Delhi no longer converts tourist visas into any other type of visa so now I'm stuck. My current tourist visa expires in March and I can't keep traveling back and forth every 6 months as this is just plain wrong. How are we supposed to start a family and settle here properly if I have to pick up and leave every few months??

Can anyone give any advice please? We're really desperate to get everything done here in India and save another trip back to London.
