Largest-Ever English-Language Minka Event in Japan!

From Across Japan Owners & Those Searching for Their Dream Minka Descend on Tiny Mountain Village

Kominka Japan is hosting Minka Summit Protected content , a gathering of expert speakers, panels, workshops, merchants and akiya bank programs, created especially for both minka-owners and those searching for their dream minka. While this event is specifically designed to assist foreign residents, its many activities can be enjoyed by Japanese and foreign residents alike. Guests, merchants, and organizations from all across Japan will also be able to tour local minka, both renovated and occupied and those for sale or rent.

The event will be held April Protected content , 2022, primarily at Koryu no mori (京都花背リゾート山村都市交流の森), a picturesque resort in the mountain village of Hanase, Kyoto, 35km north of Kyoto Station. Keynote speaker for the event is author and lifelong minka and inaka advocate Alex Kerr. Other speakers include acclaimed writer Azby Brown (The Genius of Japanese Carpentry); traditional plasterer Kyle Holzhueter; Kohei Yamamoto (1st class licensed architect and carpenter); and Jaya Thursfield, whose YouTube channel (under the name “Tokyo Llama”) documents his traditional home’s renovation and has more than 15 million views.

The event will also feature a “Minka Mall,” featuring akiya bank representatives, merchants selling traditional minka furniture and components, as well other minka (and machiya) organizations and local traditional artists. Visitors will be able to enjoy hands-on experiences at workshops on such topics as traditional Japanese carpentry.

The Kominka Japan Facebook page, which began in Protected content , boasts 1,600 members who actively share their passion for this seminal Japanese architecture, and generously provide helpful information to one another toward the greater good of helping to preserve these endangered iconic dwellings.
