Analytical Chemist – Mass Spectrometry
Indefinite-term Appointment - Full-time
The International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), which is based in Sèvres in
the outskirts of Paris (France), is an intergovernmental organization whose mandate is to
provide the basis for a coherent system of measurements throughout the world,
traceable to the International System of Units (SI). It has an international staff of about

The Chemistry Department of the BIPM operates laboratories organizing international
comparisons of peptide and small organic primary reference materials and calibrators,
and seeks an analytical chemist with mass spectrometry expertise to join its team.

The successful applicant will develop and implement chromatographic and mass
spectrometric methods for the quantification of impurities and the main component of
pure biologically relevant molecules (organics, amino acids, peptides, and small
proteins). He/she will provide precise and accurate measurements for traceable mass
fraction value assignments, and complete characterization of materials before their use in
international inter-laboratory comparisons. He/she will be an expert in one or more mass
spectrometric hyphenated techniques, with the willingness and aptitude to develop
expertise in additional analytical techniques including qNMR.
Applicants should have:
A Ph.D. degree in a relevant field (analytical chemistry/ biochemistry);
Strong technical skills in liquid chromatography (LC), mass spectrometry (MS),
LC-MS/MS, and related analytical technologies;
At least 5 years’ experience in LC-MS/MS analysis of biologically relevant
Proficiency in de novo peptide sequencing and identification/quantification of
Experience in the independent operation and routine maintenance of current
generation hybrid LC-MS/MS (Q-trap, Sciex) and/or high resolution LC-MS
(Orbitrap, Thermo) instrument and associated data analysis software;
Familiarity with measurement uncertainty evaluation;
Ability to work in a team;
A fluent level of spoken and written English;
Ability to work in a multicultural environment and to maintain good working
relations inside and outside the Organization.
Previous experience in the following areas would be an advantage:
Peptide/protein chemistry (hydrolysis, digestion, modification, labeling and
The operation of other relevant analytical instrumentation including NMR and high
resolution mass spectrometers;
Working in an ISO/IEC Protected content or equivalent environment.
Although proficiency in French is not essential at the outset, the candidate will be
expected to acquire a working knowledge of French after taking up the post, with lessons
provided as necessary.
Terms of Employment
The BIPM offers for this position an indefinite-term appointment on a full-time basis, with
an initial probationary period of six months.
The BIPM offers an annual gross salary on appointment that is competitive and will
depend on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. It is expected
that the annual salary offered will be from around Protected content to around Protected content .
Allowances are payable to staff recruited internationally and also depending on their
family situation, pursuant to the Regulations, Rules and Instructions applicable to staff
members of the BIPM. Salaries and allowances are exempt from income tax in France.
The BIPM provides a pension scheme and health insurance for staff; health insurance can
be extended to cover staff dependents. Staff members contribute to both the pension
scheme and health insurance.
