Where to stay / what to do on Christmas & New Year (Porto)

A friend is a student in Spain and planning to spend Xmas + New Year in Portugal, doesn't matter where exactly.
He's looking for an economical option to stay (but still have his own 4 walls).
Would much appreciate your advice.
